I learned a great deal from my recent return to the Isle of Eigg. I wanted to return to a place that had previously inspired a significant change in my art practice. When I first visited several years ago, I found inspiration along the beach line, where detritus had been washed ashore. Particularly around the Cathedral Caves on the south of the island, storms at sea had left the beach littered with balls of marram grass rolled together by the waves and bleached by the sun. We

What can a small island teach us about the relationship between art and community? I love the Western Isles of Scotland. I have visited several islands over the years and have loved exploring with my family. It is the place I feel most in tune with the environment. I have just returned from a week on the Isle of Eigg, staying in a tiny shepherd’s hut, living out my best Maggie Scraggle bog witch life. I first became interested in the Isle of Eigg through its environmental act

At least once a year I try to disappear for a few days and walk somewhere on my own. No schedule, no expectations, just walking, observing and making art. Over time I’ve realised how important this kind of solitary travel is for my practice. When I’m alone, I can move at my own pace. I can stop whenever something catches my attention: a shift in the light, the sound of wind moving through grass. There’s no pressure to keep going for someone else’s sake. That freedom to slow d

Last week I returned from an MA residential in Sweden. Over all it was a really challenging experience. I still haven’t fully found the words to describe it and I am still actively processing the unexpected emotional rollercoaster of intensity. However, one thing I can be clear on is how stunning Sweden was and what a profoundly beautiful experience I had while drawing there.
